Lucky Seven Interview with: Twilight Trees
1. We’ve had the enjoyable privilege of working with you at events over the years, but how did it all start, and what was the inspiration?
The business began quite literally at our Founder, Susie Reid Thomas’s kitchen table, where a single 2 metre LED cherry tree sparked the idea for what would eventually become a whole forest. With a background in PR and design, including a BA (Hons) from Central Saint Martins, Susie was instinctively drawn to the way visual impact, storytelling, and environment come together.
She became fascinated by the idea of trees taking over iconic venues and transforming spaces in unexpected ways. What started as a small creative experiment quickly grew into a much bigger vision, one that has since become a reality.
2. You’ve now been operating for 12 years. How has the business evolved, and what are you striving to achieve over the next year or two?
The “Treehouse” has grown significantly over the years, both in scale and in team. Alongside expanding our collections, our core office and production team has grown too, allowing us to take on increasingly ambitious and creative projects. One of our most recent launches for example is the Woodland Collection, designed to bring a modern, understated sense of luxury to events and weddings through sculptural, immersive forms.
Creativity has always been at the heart of the business. Susie’s background in PR and design means each project is approached not just as an installation, but as a visual narrative considering scale, flow, atmosphere and how people experience a space.
Over the next couple of years, our focus is on continuing to educate clients on the artistry and thought behind what we do, strengthening relationships across the industry, and pushing our creative boundaries even further.
3. Your trees may be artificial, but there’s a very green mission behind the business. What are you most proud of?
At our core, we’re built on a reusable product model, which has always aligned naturally with our sustainability values. Our trees are designed to have long, flexible lives, moving from event to event rather than being single-use. One of our proudest recent milestones is achieving ISO accreditation, recognising the systems and standards we have in place around sustainability and operations.
4. What challenges do you come up against when providing LED trees for events?
Often it’s the little things, like where the nearest power source is! But that’s all part of the fun. The events industry wouldn’t be the same without a few curveballs, and there’s always a solution.
5. What has been your most spectacular event to date?
That’s a tough one, there are so many. However, anything at the Natural History Museum is always a showstopper. The sheer scale and grandeur of the space, combined with our trees, creates something genuinely breathtaking.
6. You’re hugely popular with events and high-end retailers — are you branching out internationally?
Thank you! A particularly memorable international project was at The Orangery in Bahrain. We were commissioned to create bespoke lemon trees set within a circular seating arrangement at the heart of the restaurant.
Using preserved, gnarly olive trunks and lush ficus foliage, the design introduced warmth and texture, with the lemons providing a vibrant pop of colour. We also created hanging foliage hoops in the centre of a sweeping staircase, designed as a statement art installation. It was a really special project.
7. What more needs to be done to drive the message around biophilic design and its benefits?
It comes down to education and mindset. Biophilic design isn’t just a visual trend, it’s about how people feel in a space. Even when greenery is artificial, the presence of nature can help create calmer, more welcoming environments and support wellbeing and productivity.
Helping clients understand that biophilic design doesn’t have to be complex or high-maintenance is key. Thoughtfully designed installations can make a genuine difference, and continuing to share real-world examples is one of the most effective ways to drive that message forward.
Thank you to Twilight Trees for sharing that insight. If you’d like to talk trees for your next event, get in touch with the team.
