Lucky Seven Interview with: Tara Merz, Marble Private

We take a moment to turn our inquisitive seven questions inward, to our own team, and this time to the wonderful Tara Merz, Event Manager at Marble Private, to hear some behind the scenes details on her experience in the events industry and the events that have shaped her.

1. Tara, you have worked on hundreds of events by now, as an event manager, what would you say is your signature touch?

Tara: My signature touch is adding creativity to the details. I enjoy designing the visuals on Canva, sourcing the right performers and furniture and even doing the calligraphy for placement cards. It is those small, personal elements that help bring an event to life.

2. What’s the most unexpected challenge you’ve faced at an event?

At one event, a musician from our house band called in sick on the day of the event. We quickly contacted some trusted backups, who could pick up the songs quickly, to be on the stage in a few hours. The replacement musician was incredible and ended up being the perfect addition to the band.

3. What’s a behind-the-scenes moment of your work that guests never see but makes all the difference to the event?

What guests never see is the constant communication happening backstage: coordinating with suppliers, cueing performers and troubleshooting in real time. It is like conducting an orchestra to make sure everything runs smoothly out front. You have to have a sharp mind and a cool head to keep the momentum running smoothly.

4. What’s the most creative event theme you’ve ever brought to life?

There have been many, but one of the most creative was a “Seven Deadly Sins” themed birthday. It was exciting to interpret each sin – Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, and Pride – through immersive elements. We had a demon character welcoming guests, fire dancers, dancers in cages, a decadent dinner, a casino area and more. The atmosphere was amazing and the guests responded so well to it all, and carried on partying into the early hours.

5. What’s a small event detail that always makes a big impact?

For me, lighting is a small detail that completely transforms an event. The right lighting sets the mood, highlights key areas and makes everything from décor to photos look better. It is often subtle, but the effect is powerful.

6. Which part of the event process gives you the biggest adrenaline rush?

The biggest adrenaline rush comes just before guests arrive, when everything comes to life at once – the final checks are made, performers get into position, the music and lighting kicks in. It is fast and exciting as what you’ve been planning for months, finally unfolds in real time.

7. Do you have a song that instantly reminds you of an unforgettable event you’ve worked on?

‘Thriller’ by Michael Jackson will always be memorable for me. It was my first event with Marble Private, where we created an incredible Halloween party for a private client. The big surprise we’d orchestrated towards the end of the evening was a flash mob performance of ‘Thriller’. Just as it was about to start, the heavens opened and it poured with rain. But neither the guests who were outside huddled under umbrellas, nor the dancers performing in the rain, seemed to mind. It actually added to the atmosphere. The performance ended with an incredible fireworks display, making it an unforgettable moment.
