The Guest Experience: The only event metric you need
There was a time when events, weddings especially, were led by appearance.
The right flowers. The right setting. The right dress, captured perfectly.
And while those elements are still top of the list, they are no longer enough on their own.
Why?
We call it event saturation. The incredible visual language of events – wonderfully styled tables, beautiful florals, perfectly lit spaces – had become too familiar and it wasn’t creating the same impact as it was. People started looking for something else. What became clear was that guest wanted connection over spectacle, to feel included, comfortable, and genuinely welcomed, not simply impressed from a distance.
How to put this into practice?
For us, it’s about stepping into the perspective of every guest and asking a series of questions that will influence your event planning and design:
1. What does the arrival feel like?
2. How are guests guided throughout the event?
3. How is their presence acknowledged?
4. Are there moments to pause, opportunities to slow down, for guests to find time for themselves or does it feel rushed and rigid?
5. Where are the opportunities for connection?
6. When does pace rise and when does it soften?
All these small details (and more) make a the difference – whether its a perfectly timed drink on arrival, to places to recuperate, or ways for the guests to connect with the hosts and be part of the experience.
Why the guest experience metric matters
We live in a time where attention is short and expectations are high. Guests are travelling further. They’re investing more time and energy into being there. And in return, they’re looking (consciously or not) for a sense of ease, warmth, and belonging to connect with the moment and enjoy the celebration.
When that’s missing, it’s noticeable. Guests are bystanders. There are gaps in the event flow and guests get a sense of being slightly outside the experience, rather than part of it.
But when the guest experience is well thought out, everything flows. There’s a natural rhythm to the day. Energy builds and relaxes in the right places. Guests know where they should be, what they should be doing, and they find the comfort and the freedom to be themselves, to give back and… how should we say it… get stuck in.
Leading With the Right Emotion
For wedding couples and private hosts, the shift helps keep the focus on the right emotion.
So instead of asking:
“How do we want this to look?”
The question becomes:
“What do we want it to feel like and how do we want people to feel?”
Welcomed. Relaxed. Connected.
When you begin there, decisions become clearer. You’ll find ways to give a more personalised experience, that reflects your own personal story, not a check list of shoulds, and that sparks engagement with your guests, not just acknowledges their attendance
A Different Kind of Lasting Impression
As the years pass, guests might not remember every detail of your incredible occasion, but they’ll always remember how fun it was, how relaxed they felt, how part of the proceedings they were, and how they got to spend time with you celebrating. When you have those elements covered, everything else is a plus.
